Triangulating quantitative and qualitative methods in translation process research: retrospection as a case in point

The seminar will be in English.

In general, studies involving eye-tracking input in translation have used quantitative methods to analyse process data. This, however, sheds very little light on problem-solving and decision-making strategies. At LETRA, we propose instead a qualitative approach using retrospective protocols recorded in conjunction with an eye tracker. By mapping retrospections onto gaze plots we hope to see if subjects fixate their gaze on the stretches of source/target text which they actually report. This, we believe, would be an indicator of higher levels of metacognitive activity (usually associated with expertise in translation) and corroborate Just and Carpenter's eye-mind assumption.

Biographical note
