Putting the reader in the picture. Screen translation and foreign-language learning

This research is based on the juxtaposition of two convictions: the first one, that translation is a necessary and desirable skill for foreign language development and learning and, the second, that interlingual and intralingual subtitles offer an opportunity to acquire or learn a foreign-language more rapidly. The aim of this research lies in evaluating the effectiveness of subtitling as a language-learning tool amongst learners in Portugal. Two experiments will be conducted to analyze the impact of intralingual (teletext) and interlingual subtitled material. Additional data will also be collected through questionnaires and informal interviews to the learner subjects and their language teachers.
