What is the Intercultural Studies Group?

The Intercultural Studies Group was founded in 2000 in order to carry out research and training in the field of translation and intercultural studies.

In 2000 the group set up a Masters program for training professional translators, with a focus on new translation technologies. Over the years the program has been offered in several formats, with modules in online mode.

In 2003 the group launched a doctoral program in Translation and Intercultural Studies, which received the Spanish government's "Mention of Quality" through to 2011. This qualification provided significant funding, which enabled the program to employ many of the most prestigious translation scholars in the world. By 2013 just over 100 students had passed the coursework component of the program. In 2014 the program was absorbed into a wider doctoral program in Humanistic Studies.

The group has had the status of "Grup consolidat" within the Catalan research system since 2006.

The group has participated in research projects at the Catalan, Spanish, and European levels, including work on the online training of translators, the sociology of the translation profession, the use of translation in language teaching, and the role of mediation in multilingual societies

The group has organized a series of conferences for graduate students in Translation Studies, training seminars for translation teachers, and regular talks by visiting scholars.
